Where sub relationships actually go wrong
Not price — edges. Who patches after the plumber, who hauls the tear-off, whether "install" includes hookup. Write the scope edge into the form while both of you are looking at the same wall. The payment trigger deserves equal precision: "at rough-in inspection passed" is a fact; "when the work is done" is an argument.

What should a subcontractor agreement include?

Do I need a written agreement for a small sub job?
Yes. A one-page work order beats a handshake even for a two-day job — it fixes the price, the scope edge, and the payment trigger, which are exactly the three things people remember differently later.
Should subs carry their own insurance?
Generally yes — require certificates of general liability and workers' comp where applicable, and keep copies. An uninsured sub's accident can land on the GC's policy or the GC personally. Confirm requirements for your state.
Is a 1099 subcontractor different from an employee?
Legally, yes, and misclassification is expensive. Control over how work is done, provided tools, and payment structure all factor in. This template documents an independent relationship but does not by itself make someone a contractor — check your state's tests.
