How to Estimate a Landscaping Job Without Guessing at the Pile
Landscaping estimates go wrong in the conversions — square feet to yards, yards to loads, machine work to hand work when the gate is 36 inches. Here's the field method with the numbers that keep the math honest.
Step 1 — Measure areas, note access
Beds by length × average width; lawn areas for sod the same; patios and walkways as their own shapes. While measuring, answer the access question: can a machine reach the backyard, or does everything move by wheelbarrow? That one answer can double the labor hours, so it's a measurement, not a footnote.
Step 2 — Convert to buyable units

Step 3 — Split machine and hand labor
Loader hours, dingo hours, and hand hours carry different costs and different production. "Spread 14 yards" is one line if the machine reaches and a very different line if it doesn't. Price each at your tracked rates: yards spread per hour, feet of edge cut per hour, pallets laid per hour.
Step 4 — Disposal is a destination, not a shrug
Cut sod is heavy, spoils need a dump site, brush may chip or may ride. Name the disposal line: loads × your haul cost. On removals, disposal often rivals install labor — the estimate should show it.
Step 5 — Plants with terms
Unit price by size, sourced availability noted, and the warranty stated — replaced once within a season if watered per instructions, or explicitly excluded. The sentence you write here is the argument you skip in August.
