Step 1 — Board math

Per room: walls (perimeter × height) + ceiling (L × W) − large openings, ÷ sheet coverage (32 or 48 sq ft), + 10% waste. Bigger sheets = fewer joints = less finishing — spec 4x12 or 54-inch where access allows and say so in the quote; it's a quality argument the customer understands. Type matters too: MR board in baths, Type X at the garage wall, ceiling board where trusses are 24" o.c.

Step 2 — Hang and finish, separately

Two lines, two rates: your hang rate (boards per crew-day) and your finish rate (sq ft per finisher-day through three coats). Separate lines survive scope changes — "hang only, painter finishes" or "finish someone else's hang" (price that one carefully; other people's screws are a condition tier).
