How Much to Charge to Install LVP — Build the Number, Don't Google It
Every flooring forum answer to this question is a range wide enough to bankrupt you at one end. Here's the method instead, with a worked example you can rerun with your own numbers.
The formula
Price = (labor hours × loaded hourly cost) + materials + prep and piece lines, ÷ (1 − target margin). Loaded cost includes taxes, insurance, van, and overhead share — what the hour costs the business. If you've never computed it, do it once; it changes every bid after.
Worked example: 800 sq ft main level, straight lay
- Material: 800 sq ft + 10% waste = 880 sq ft of plank. Customer-supplied in this example.
- Tear-out: 550 sq ft carpet and pad, 2.5 hours + disposal fee $60.
- Prep: allowance 3 bags leveler ($45 + 1.5 hours), per-extra-bag rate named in terms.
- Install: at 65 sq ft/hour across open rooms and a hallway ≈ 12.5 hours.
- Pieces: 6 transitions, 30 lf quarter round, 2 toilet pulls ≈ 3 hours + $140 material.
- Labor total: 19.5 hours × $55 loaded = $1,073. Direct cost ≈ $1,318.
- At 40% target margin: 1,318 ÷ 0.60 ≈ $2,197 — about $2.75/sq ft labor-and-prep on customer-supplied material.
Change the layout to herringbone or the tear-out to glued vinyl and watch the number move — that's the point. A flat per-foot price can't see those changes; the method can.
Where LVP pricing goes wrong
Quoting the flyer fight. Don't discount to a big-box teaser — itemize what it excludes. Prep as a shrug. The allowance-plus-unit-rate structure turns surprises into signed change orders. Margin math backwards. Cost × 1.4 is not a 40% margin — verify with the free margin calculator.
